Gaining Respect: Becoming a Raid Leader

Gaining Respect:  Becoming a Raid Leader

About the only way to become a persistant raid leader that people follow is through respect. If you rag on others in /ooc, you'll get a lot fewer people following you. If you yell at people in your raid too much, they won't follow you.

Support other raids and do a good job, advise when needed, and help keep morale up and be encouraging to all (at least to those who deserve it). If you are getting stressed out (which will happen at times due to many factors.. stupidity and when the freeps are equal to or outnumber the creeps tends to do this), remember that it's a game and its for enjoyment. Winning isn't everything, having a good time while getting defeated is better than having a horrible raid experiance while winning. Last ditch heroic stands ARE fun even when you do get rolled in the end. There is always another battle in the future, the war isn't over yet!

If you help others have fun, a) you'll have a lot more fun yourself b) they'll be more willing to follow you, in or outside of a raid (/ooc is actually a good place to lead for those situations that don't require a raid). c) Freeps will die

Ideas for becoming a (respected) RAID Leader

Dont really feel like typing out a guide, so here's some basic tips.

  1. Realize that there are some situations which will be out of your control. You really can't help it if your raid is composed of mostly greendots or if your raid is full of redrings that have no maps. Practice developing strategies which pit your group's strongest attribute against the enemy's weakest attribute, even if you are not leading and do not share your strategy with others. Practice will allow for a smoother flow and faster pace when leading.
  2. Encourage your raid members to play their favorite class in the raid, even if it impacts performance. A raid in which your players are happy is one which will experience less attitition. You will also find invites are more plentiful when people are not forced to play a class they abhor.
  3. Know the difference between a need and a desire. You likely do not need to control every outpost or even every keep. Identify which areas are vital to a raid's success and those which can be overlooked until the action dies.
  4. Make time for breathing and keep your voice at a moderate volume while being stern. It's very easy to get overwhelmed when leading a full raid and just as much so for your raid members. Out-of-combat rezzing is a good time to congratulate your raid if successful and provide identify weak points in strategy if you were wiped.
  5. Practice conveying concise information. Solo or raiding, there is a limited amount of time for callouts. If the Freeps are moving, vent chatter needs to cease.
  6. Assume a role of authority when leading groups. While natural leadership skills go a long way towards maintaining forward progress, at times it is necessary to redirect or remove an unruly raid member. Stating a person's name over Ventrillo immediately followed by a specific direction will usually achieve the desired result.
  7. Learn to love the Gold Tags. Many players despise those players that follow the raid and lower the amount of infamy they receive. A successful raid leader knows that when the fight is balancing on the knife's edge, especially in keep defense, that Gold Tags often mean the difference between a wipe and a rout. Many a fight has been won and lost with a single non-raided Warleader revive.
